In light of the recent anniversary of September 11th, please read the following quotes about the events that took place 12 years ago. In your response be sure to include:
1. an analysis of the quotes (what do the quotes mean?)
2. what they mean to you
3. how they relate to the theme of our unit, "What Do You Stand For?"
4. Include your first name ONLY!

--Ms. Brummer

“The attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit. Instead we have emerged stronger and more unified. We feel renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic, and religious freedom, the rule of law and respect for human life. We are more determined than ever to live our lives in freedom."
- Rudolph Giuliani, former mayor of New York City

"Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat."
- George W. Bush, former President of the United States

I think the quotes mean that we, when attacked, come back stronger than ever. I think it is motivational that if I'm ever hurt or down I will come back stronger. It shows that we should stand for our country and trust our country and fight for liberty and justice.

The quotes mean that we have come out stronger then we were before. They mean to me that we are now stronger then we were before. They relate to our unit because we now more firmly stand for freedom.

I think the quotes describe how the end result of 9/11 was better for the victims than the terrorists. We helped each other get through 9/11 and now we are in a better place.

9/11 was a very unfortunate event. All together I think that these two quotes are saying that we are all staying strong, and after 9/11 it has made us even stronger. What they mean to me, is that, by trying to bring us down, they have in turn made us stronger. This relates to our current unit because its about standing up and staying strong.

These quotes are showing how that even after these attacks, we got stronger. These quotes to me show how strong and secure the United States are and how they grow from tragedy. These quotes relate to "What do you stand for" by showing what we can stand up to and defend from.

1. The quotes mean that no matter what happens to the United States of America we can and will always recover from it. It means that nothing will faze us. America will always stay strong.

2. (Same as number 1)

3. The quotes relate to the theme of our unit because the U.S.A. stands for freedom and liberty and justice for all and everyone stands for something different.

I think that this quote shows a strong feeling and how strong our nation is as we get back up short after the incident. The quote by Bush means that we (America) will not back down and hide in fear and defeat. It means that we should fight back through Liberty and Justice.
This quote is linked to our unit that we are learning now because it focuses on what America stands for, and who we are as ourselves together.

The first comment by Rudolph Giuliani meant that the events of 9/11 have done the opposite of what the terrorists they intended to do. Instead of being broken and in disrepair, we have come out of the horror with stronger bonds and a reminder of the price we pay to be a free, prosperous nation. The second quote, by George W. Bush, meant that the terrorists couldn't see the strength we had through diversity, which is one of their major flaws. There is strength in freedom, and strength in liberty. The meaning of these quotes to me is that sometimes it takes a horrible event to realize what your values are, and how lucky you are to be alive. When something like this happens, even on a smaller scale, it's a chance to step and show exactly what you stand for.

POEM 1&2
1.) What does this quote mean? This quote is saying that instead of breaking our nation and spirit, the attack simply made us stronger by unifying us and renewing our structure (political, religious, etc.)
2.) What does this mean to you? This poem means to me that we will always stay strong as a unified nation
3.) How does this relate to our unit? It relates by showing that we should always stand up for ourselves, and shows that we always need to stay together.

I think these quotes mean that 9/11 was an attack meant to discourage us make us lose hope, when in fact we emerged even more unified than before. To me, these quotes mean that the United States is strong and we will only get stronger. I think this relates to our unit "What Do You Stand For?" because these quotes show that the United States stands for freedom, unity, and justice.

Katie I like how you said that the U.S. only gets stronger from these attacks. The attacks only temporarily weakened us. We will always remember the past but we won't live in it,

1: The quotes are saying America has pride no matter what happens..
2.My interpretation of the quotes are, America is strong and has pride and that we may lose a building but we will never lose our pride.
3:They relate to how the US stands for pride and freedom. The attacks we will always remember but we have come out even stronger than before.

The quotes mean that america is united and strong, we do not give up easily and we help others in need. To me they mean look forward to a good future, help others in need, and never give up. These relate to the theme of the unit because we stand stand for unity and we have showed that during and after the harsh attacks of 9/11.

1. I think these quotes are trying to say that we have beaten the terrorists because we haven't allowed them to succeed. The terrorists intended to spread chaos and fear throughout our country, but these quotes are saying that we have become stronger by helping each other through the attacks.
2. To me, these quotes mean that I don't have to be worried in the future. I was barely born when we were attacked, and I have trouble relating to the event. However, hearing others talk about it I feel confident that the United States can always recover from tragedies.
3. One way 9/11 relates to our unit is that 9/11 helped people realize what they stood for. It gave people feelings of unity and freedom, counteracting the terrorist attacks.
